Let's see how to take a photo and how to get the image from the Camera-roll via react-native-image-picker.

In React Native, you can implement taking a photo feature and accessing the image on the Camera-roll like below.

To implement it, I will show you how to use react-native-image-picker library.

You can see the example source code on Github.

This example source code includes the below.

Install react-native-image-picker

Execute the command below to install react-native-image-picker.

npm install --save react-native-image-picker

To use react-native-image-picker on iOS, execute the command below.

cd ios
pod install
cd ..

Next, you need to set the permissions to use react-native-image-picker for the image features.

iOS permissions

To use react-native-image-picker on iOS, open ios/[project name]/Info.plist and modify it like below.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "">
<plist version="1.0">
  <string>$(PRODUCT_NAME) would like access to your photo gallery</string>
  <string>$(PRODUCT_NAME) would like to use your camera</string>
  <string>$(PRODUCT_NAME) would like to save photos to your photo gallery</string>
  <string>$(PRODUCT_NAME) would like to use your microphone (for videos)</string>

Android permissions

To use react-native-image-picker on Android, open android/app/main/AndroidManifest.xml file and modify it like below.

<manifest xmlns:android=""
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" />
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE"/>

How to use

First, import the library like below to use react-native-image-picker.

import ImagePicker from 'react-native-image-picker';

And then, you can use it like below.

  • Show Camera, Camera-roll, and Custom buttons.

    const options = {
      title: 'Load Photo',
      customButtons: [
        { name: 'button_id_1', title: 'CustomButton 1' },
        { name: 'button_id_2', title: 'CustomButton 2' }
      storageOptions: {
        skipBackup: true,
        path: 'images',
    ImagePicker.showImagePicker(options, (response) => {
      console.log('Response = ', response);
      if (response.didCancel) {
        console.log('User cancelled image picker');
      } else if (response.error) {
        console.log('ImagePicker Error: ', response.error);
      } else if (response.customButton) {
        console.log('User tapped custom button: ', response.customButton);
      } else {
        // You can also display the image using data:
        // const source = { uri: 'data:image/jpeg;base64,' + };
  • Open Camera feature

    const options = {
      storageOptions: {
        skipBackup: true,
        path: 'images',
    ImagePicker.launchCamera(options, (response) => {
      if (response.error) {
        console.log('LaunchCamera Error: ', response.error);
      else {
  • Open Camera-roll

    const options = {
      storageOptions: {
        skipBackup: true,
        path: 'images',
    ImagePicker.launchImageLibrary(options, (response) => {
      if (response.error) {
        console.log('LaunchImageLibrary Error: ', response.error);
      else {

I’ve created react-native-image-picker example. see the link to check it out.

We’ve seen how to use react-native-image-picker. I hope this blog post helps someone to implement Photo/Camera-roll feature on React Native.
